rssmasher 0 Comments Garage News
Most homeowners will never have to open their garage door manually. The electric garage door opener was invented in 1926 by C.G. Johnson and since WWII they have become universal. The only time you will ever need to open your garage door manually is in the event of a power outage. While unlikely, it’s still a good idea to know how to do it. Read the steps to open a garage door without power below.
How To Open A Garage Door Manually
Only attempt the following steps if your garage is in the down position. If your power goes out with the door in the up position, contact a garage door repair company for assistance. Attempting these steps with the door open is extremely dangerous.
1) Locate the emergency release cord hanging from the center rail of your garage door mechanism. The cord is usually red or has a red plastic handle.
2) Pull the cord down and back towards the motor until the lever locks into the down position. You may need a step ladder to reach it depending on your height and the length of the cord.
3) Lift the garage door with caution using both hands. If the garage door won’t budge, check the cord again and make sure it’s locked in the down position. If the door is too heavy, you may need someone to assist.
4) Once the door is off the ground, do not let it go. Securely prop the door open with 2x4s or have someone hold it until you are able to back your car out.
5) Carefully ease the door back down.
6) To re-engage the door when the power is back, simply pull the cord again but this time towards the door. Then, push the button on your remote to activate the motor and the door will reattach to the automatic opener.
If your garage door won’t open when the power is on, you might need a new spring or another garage door repair. Contact the experts at Larry Myers Garage Doors to get a quote today.

As fall arrives in Portland, many homeowners are moving their outdoor furniture into the garage, purchasing new yard tools, and finding that their garage has suddenly gotten very crowded. No matter the size of your garage, with smart storage solutions your garage can remain functional. Read on for tips on how to store it all!
Seasonal Garage Storage Ideas
For items only used a few weeks a year, utilize garage overhead storage shelves anchored two to three feet from the ceiling. Items like holiday decorations, beach toys, and camping gear can be put away for the majority of the year. Be sure to keep the bins labeled so that you can easily find what you need.
Tool Storage Ideas
There’s nothing worse than not being able to find a tool when you need it. Consider buying a large rolling toolbox and label each drawer with its contents. Or, you can DIY custom garage storage by installing pegboard. With pegboard, you can see all your tools at a glance and make good use of wall space.
Yard Storage Ideas
If you don’t have a shed, you’ll need to make room inside for outdoor furniture and your grill to prevent rain damage. We recommend partial disassembly if possible to limit the amount of space needed. Store your yard tools separately. Rakes, brooms, hoses, and even leaf blowers can be hung from hooks or pegboard to keep them off the floor and out of the way.

Read MoreGetting to Know Your Garage Door: Types of Springs
rssmasher 0 Comments Garage News
Most homeowners open and close their garage doors at least twice a day, but never consider the mechanics that make it work. The function of your garage door is fairly simple. When you push the button on your garage door opener, it’s actually the springs that support the heavy lifting of opening or closing of the door.
Types of Garage Door Springs
There are three primary types of garage door springs: extension springs, torsion springs and torque tube springs. Let’s go over how each of these springs work and the pros and cons for each type.
Garage Door Extension Springs
Extension springs are mounted on either side of your garage door. When the door is closed the springs are extended. The springs contract to open the door. This type of spring should always s be paired with safety cables to prevent damage or injury when the spring fails.
Garage Door Torsion Springs
Torsion springs are mounted horizontally above the center of your garage door. Instead of stretching like an extension spring, torsion springs wind and unwind to support the opening and closing of a garage door. Depending on the weight of the door, additional springs can be added. Most doors are supported by one or two torsion springs.
Garage Door Torque Tube Springs
Torque tube springs are very similar to torsion springs, but the torsion spring is encased in a tube that runs across the top of the garage door. These springs were designed to eliminate some of the safety risks associated with replacing a torsion spring.
Extension Springs Vs. Torsion Springs Vs. Torque Tube Springs
If your garage door spring breaks and you are trying to decide on the best spring replacement, torsion springs are usually the best investment. Let’s look at the pros and cons.
Lifespan
Torsion springs can last up to twice as long as extension springs.
Cost
Garage door extension springs cost slightly less than torsion springs up front. Torque tube springs are typically the most expensive option.
Safety
Torsion springs can make a big noise when they break but there is no risk of them flying off and injuring anyone. Due to the way they are installed, they are a much safer option than extension springs. Torque tube springs are the safest of the three options.
Maintenance
Torsion springs offer better control and as a result, requires fewer balance adjustments and maintenance.
