Safety Tips for Children

The warmer months are right around the corner and that means there will be many more kids spending time outside, usually in our yards and driveways. This is the best time to think about garage door safety and discuss it with our children. We always recommend setting some family ground rules about using the garage door safely and we’re happy to provide you with our top 4 suggestions:

  1. Inspect Your Sensors – Your garage door’s sensors are designed to stop your garage door (and perhaps reverse it) if it detects an object is in its path. This helps homeowners from having toys, bumpers, and even more delicate objects from being crushed under the weight of the door. We suggest you check your sensors with some frequency to make sure the eye beams are aligned properly, and you can detect solid lights on each sensor. If you see that the beams are not aligned or you see flashing lights on the sensors, they need to be adjusted or repaired.
  2. Watch Your Fingers – One point you should be sure to drive home to your children is that they shouldn’t touch your garage door’s components. They should never touch the door’s rollers, cables, and tracks, especially when the door is in motion.
  3. It’s Time to Pause – You may want to make a rule that all games are on “pause” when the garage door is going up or down. Stray objects can cause the door to malfunction, or even break, if they get caught in the components.
  4. Safely Exit – It’s important that children understand they shouldn’t try to run under the garage door while it’s closing. This is a common cause of injuries they can easily be avoided.
